This image from the Illustrated London News of 6 August 1853 (p80) shows the rather strange prefabricated ‘village’ made from waterproof papier mache boards by architectural ornament specialist Charles Bielefeld, displayed beside the Thames prior to being shipped off to Australia. Bielefeld also published a catalogue of his portable buildings in 1853.
